趣旨近代以降、国民国家の理念とともに「一国家一言語」や「一国家一通貨」といった発想が広がり、言語や通貨の統一性が政治的・経済的な結束の指標とみなされてきました。また言語と通貨は、いずれも通用範囲が広い方が有用であると思われがちです。しかし今日の言語・通貨の実態は、はるかに多様です。英語や米ドルが依然としてグローバルな標準や基軸として機能する一方で、移民のコミュニティ言語、少数言語の復興運動、地域（コミュニティ）通貨や企業通貨の広がりなど、限られた通用範囲に独自の社会的・経済的価値が見いだされる事例も増えています。デジタル化はこの二重の動きをさらに加速させています。翻訳技術、デジタル通貨、生成AIなどの登場により、言語や通貨の生成・変換・流通のあり方が大きく変化し、新たな使用形態や存在形態が生まれています。こうした状況は、言語と通貨の構造的な類似点と相違点をあらためて検討する必要性を示唆します。固定された一国家一言語／通貨の時代から流動的で多元的な言語・通貨の生態系の時代へと移り変わるとすれば、言語も通貨も、選択と使い分けがカギとなるでしょう。本ワークショップは、言語学と経済学の観点から、言語＝通貨論を多様性の観点から刷新することを目的とします。変化しつつある社会・技術・経済環境のなかで、人間の二大メディアともされる言語と通貨にどのように向き合うべきかを、学際的に考える場としたいと考えています。

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Over the past centuries, the rise of nation states promoted the ideals of “one nation – one language” and “one state – one currency.” Today, however, linguistic and monetary realities are far more diverse. English and the US dollar continue to serve as global standards, yet Community languages of immigrants, revitalization movements for minoritized languages, and the spread of community or corporate currencies show that limited spheres of circulation can hold distinct social and economic value.Digitalization further accelerates this dual dynamic between unity and multitude: translation technologies, digital currencies, and generative AI reshape how languages and currencies are created, converted, and circulated, generating new modes of use and new forms of existence.These developments call for a renewed examination of the structural parallels and differences between language and money. As fixed national systems give way to more dynamic configurations, strategic choice and contextual differentiation become increasingly central.This workshop brings together scholars from linguistics and economics to rethink language–currency analogies from a pluralistic perspective. It aims to offer an interdisciplinary forum for considering how we should engage with these two major media in an evolving social, technological, and economic environment.
